Kerrville's Rialto Movie Poster -- 1941

Fred and Annie Streit made an interesting discovery when they were tearing down an old building in Ingram: several old movie posters from Kerrville.  These posters, all from the 1941 season, were underneath a tar-paper cover -- they were used as a sort of underlayment for the wall, possibly during the Second World War when materials were hard to obtain.  There were two movies theaters here in 1941 -- the Arcadia and the Rialto.  The Arcadia is being restored; the Rialto was torn down in the 1970s by the Charles Schreiner Bank, to make a parking lot.  That parking lot is now between Herring Printing Company and Grape Juice.  Thanks to the Streits for bringing these posters by.

  2. Joe, what is the latest on the Arcadia? I haven't been in there since the late 70s, would love to see it again!

  3. Joey, One note about these posters and life in Small town Texas Before TV in the late 50's and mid 60's, before "Central Air Conditioning" .

Manly W. Cooper Sr. and Jr. had the Vogue at 819 Water St. (next to the Bluebonnet hotel, Cafe, barbershop, and Drug Store) all part of the "SEVILLE Village" look red tile motif. Every week the "manager" of the two "movie houses" would go to selected stores and places of business to put these posters in the window, etc. and leave 2 passes to the show with the owner. I never understood how he decided who was "poster worthy" but Manly and I (age 5 to 19) would go to the show 2 or 3 times per week to enjoy the show, the popcorn, and most importantly the "central air" of the Arcadia. With no rain, no TV, and no other "cool" place the movie would be packed on week nights, to see a John Wayne western or a "Color" Movie from MGM with the loin and the beginning along with the dozing for this "kid" towards the end.
