Mystery Photo Revealed

It became quickly apparent after I published yesterday's Mystery Photo I'd picked one that was way too easy.  In fact, more than one person used Google to find the correct answer -- Google kindly pointed them to my own blog for the correct answer.
Hmm.
Well, next time I'll just have to be more sneaky.
Here's the photo I published late Friday:
The Nook Restaurant, corner of Water and Sidney Baker.
This little restaurant was on the corner of Water and Sidney Baker, built on part of the old St. Charles Hotel foundation.  You can actually see the St. Charles Hotel steps leading up to the restaurant. It was run by the Blackburn family, if I remember correctly.  Later the Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital was built on the site, and today it's being made into Peterson Plaza.
Next time the photo will be trickier!

  1. I like the idea that the Nook made use of the old St. Charles Hotel steps.

I don't know why I like it, but I do.

Perhaps it's because the "old" was not completely destroyed by the "new", and at one point in time the Nook was the "new."

I don't have a blog, but if I did, and if Google referred people to my blog, I would take that as a great compliment.

I hope you did, too, Joe.

Your blog, more importantly, your efforts provide us with a great gift. Thank you!

  2. Yes, the Nook was run by Bob Blackburn's parents, Smitty & Howard Blackburn. They also operated another restaurant further down on Water Street. My mother worked as a waitress for them in her 20's in the 1930s.
