Then and Now: the corner of Main and Earl Garrett Streets

When World War II was finally over, Kerrville welcomed Chester Nimitz back home with a big parade and speeches on the courthouse square.  Most people associate Nimitz with Fredericksburg, where he was born.  Few know Nimitz moved to Kerrville with his mother and stepfather (who ran the St Charles Hotel) when he was a young boy and actually attended Kerrville schools from first grade on.
He left for Annapolis before graduating from Tivy; one of the purposes of the big "Welcome Home Chester" day was to award him his Tivy Diploma -- though a little late.

  1. My Dad ran the Sinclair Service Station at one time. There was picture in the newspaper of him standing there with his service station hat. I would love to find that picture. Lynn Lemeiller said she had seen it. If you run across it in all of your history, would you let me know please. Linda Plaster
