Kerrville -- around 1980?

If I were to guess, I'd think this aerial shot of Kerrville was taken around 1980.
The clues I'm using to make this guess include the absense of the Blue Bonnet Hotel, but the appearance of the little drive in bank for Charles Schreiner Bank.   I see that Charles Schreiner Bank has torn down the old bank building but erected the building that's there today.  It looks like the old First United Methodist Church has been transformed into Guadalupe Savings and Loan.  One Schreiner Center has not yet been built, but the Guy Griggs medical offices building is up.  The new Sidney Baker bridge is completed.  I see the Rialto Theater down by our print shop.  H-E-B has expanded their store at Main and Clay streets. There are probably clues I'm missing.  If you see something, just add it to the comments section below.

Kerrville, around 1980.  I think.

  1. I'm sure you are close Joey. I see the damage from the '78 flood, but when was Sid Peterson parking garage built, and I can't remember Voelkel's office without a drive through. At any rate, this picture brings back great memories!

  2. That's an interesting photo, and I like it very much.

In this photo, the courthouse has been expanded, Reiter's Garage building still exists, and I can see the Goodyear store across from the old ice plant site.

Many years before that Goodyear building was constructed, there was a very large wooden building on the lot.

Memory escapes me, and I don't remember what business was in the old wooden building, but I do remember when it was built.

That was more years ago than I care to remember.

    Great photo!

  3. J C Penney, etc. buildings are there...Down in 1983? Reiter's and Furman Insurance are there. Still had the Goodyear Store. 1980-81 I would agree. Photo could have been taken to show the finished Schreiner Bank? Notice the cars and people below the dam as well as on the foot bridge. Would this be before the 1978 flood?
Key to that would have been Tranquility Island which was cleaned up after the flood...

  4. The old Sidney Baker Street bridge had character. I liked it.

  5. There really isn't very much of the original downtown area that still remains.

"Progress" has replaced a great deal of it.

  6. Joe,

Whatever became of the Arcadia Theater?

I know that it was purchased by/given to someone locally in Kerrville.

I also read that it was being remodeled, but what is its status?

    Thanks.

    1. The City sold it to a restaurateur and no one has any idea about its future. I'd like to be optimistic, but the plans I've heard are ghastly.

  7. Joe, FYI, the history of SPMH states: "In 1987, a four-story parking complex opened across the street from the hospital." So, obviously the picture was before then. CaptJack
