Lakeside Park, Kerrville, roughly mid-1920s

There was, in the early part of the last century, a very popular park on the banks of the Guadalupe River,  It was a place where people gathered, swam, and possibly enjoyed public events, such as boxing.  I ran across a rough old negative of the spot.   In it I can see some type of slide, which might have had a sled of some type that shot into the water, a diving board, picnic tables and, of course, the beautiful Guadalupe.
According to an article by Michael Bowlin, the park featured "a two-story, 60 feet long bath house built in 1913."  It was "about a block west of G street."
"One side of the bath house had eight dressing rooms for boys, with the other side having the same number for girls.  People paid 10 cents park admission.
"The park was the brainchild of a Mr. Utterback.  He and his wife managed it and their son Dewey served as a lifeguard.
"In the early 1920s, a Mr. Bice bought the park.  About 1925 a large dance pavilion was added next to the bath house.  For the next seven years, Lakeside was the most popular gathering place for youth in the county.
"The park was still prospering in 1932 when a flood did irreparable damage to the buildings, and the park was soon closed."

  1. Very cool photo. You can see a lot more when you zoom in. I assume that slide is like the one at MoRanch?
