Tuesday Then & Now: the Blue Bonnet Hotel

This old photo of Kerrville's Blue Bonnet Hotel was recently sent to me by Steven Meeker.  I went down to the riverbank to see how much the view had changed.

The scene today.  Note the trees.

  1. Oh, how I loved that beautiful, old hotel.

  2. After all those years, the same trees are still there. Thank goodness the floods didn't wash them away.

  3. In the second photo, I can still see the loading area where we used to put ski boats into the water.

Over the years, I saw Cotton load his boats into that water hundreds of times.

  4. I've never before seen the pavilion that is in the second photo. When was it built?

Does it have a staircase that leads down to the river?

  5. In what year were the additional floors added to the Blue Bonnet Hotel?

  6. I miss that old hotel. It was a true landmark.

... Lost in the name of progress.

  7. When the hotel was torn down, who owned it?

  8. That is a most pleasing scene.

  9. Joe, what brand of camera do you own?

I want to buy one just like it.

  10. The Bluebonnet Hotel was torn down in 1971 or 72. I think the older photo was a Starr Bryden photo, at least that's what the album said that I found it in. He died in 1959, so it was probably taken in the mid to late 50s.

It is cool that the trees are still there. Great job, Joe! I sure do love this site.

  11. I smiled about the camera question above. I take most of my "on the go" pictures with my old beat up cell phone, a 2009-era Blackberry Curve.

As for Steven D's dating of the photo to the mid to late 1950s, I agree. I'll correct the guess above, on the caption.
